He wanted to visit Ground Zero to pay his respect, but this was refused because of ’security issues’, the big wild card of American politics. The president did visit Columbia University‘s World Leaders Forum. This too caused a lot of protest among a large group of politically correct and extremely conservative, temporarily left, students.

Is the President of Iran not a world leader, one might ask. This was apparently not the issue. The President of Iran does BAD THINGS and thus he cannot have his say. Luckily the president of Columbia University did not yield to the pubic protests, although he was a bad host enough to criticize his guest in rather strong language in his introductionary speech. A revealing display of hypocrisy and bad manners. Apparently Mr. Bollinger thought it was necessary to safeguard his position as president of the university.

President Ahmadinejad proved himself to be the bigger man here by saying sensible things while ignoring the laughter and disapprovement these things caused with the public. When he says that there is more investigation needed into the Holocaust, every historian knows he’s right. The history of the Holocaust has been dominated until now by a strong political Jewish pressure group in the US, as well as by a communal feeling of guilt towards the Jewish people in Europe. We all know, but do not want to know, antisemitism was used and blown up by the fascists, not invented by them. ‘The Holocaust did not happen’ can be understood by an historian as ‘the story told now is not complete’. Where are the Roma in this story for example? Are they part of that ‘six million’, or is the dead count yet to be raised?

The appraisal of a historical ‘incident’ like the Holocaust or September 11 changes over time. Historical facts are being constructed and it is no more than sensible to think that over a hundred years the attack on the World Trait Centre will be viewed in a global perspective that tries to be objective about the causes. That there are people who are just wrong and bad, is too simple a story, every sensible person would agree.

Seen in the same cultural scientific light, Ahmadinejad’s remark about homosexuals is also nothing to laugh about. When he says that in Iran “we do not have homosexuals like in your country”, he is quite right. Homosexuality as a lifestyle, like we know here in the West, is nonexistent in Iran. Off course there are erotic contacts between men in all sorts of ways, but they have completely different forms than we are familiar with.

It are these cultural differences that complicate the story and are being ignored by a large part of, even the academic, American public. This thinking in differences does not provide clear cut rules of behavior, but it does mean that you just let the man speak, for God’s sake.

“Let me begin with a supposition. Suppose that
“humanities computing,” “digital humanities,” “technology
in the humanities,” “media arts and technology,”
and other such awkwardly named associations
and programs will one day fulfill their mission. That
mission, phrased broadly, is to integrate information
technology into the work of the humanities so
fully and in so entangled a manner—at once as tool,
perspective, and theme—that it would seem just as
redundant to add the words “computing,” “digital,”
“media,” or “technology” to “humanities” as it was
previously to add “print-based.” Information technology
will simply be part of the business of the
humanities along with all its other business. What
then?”

Now I have a PDA with flat rate internet, possibilities emerge to become even more efficient and machine like . I want to get emails like before I got SMS text messages and I want to have a calendar that I can access from my phone and through any PC. Email was no problem, gmail-pop to outlook mobile is easy to set up (even easier than in pc-windows!). The calendar was a bigger problem.

After trying many things, I found a good (free) solution to syncronise your PDA (windows mobile) calendar with an online one, without using a PC:

ActiveGcSync by Gil Milow

Just run the program in the background of your PDA and every 15 minutes or so it synchronizes your mobile outlook calendar with your personal google calendar (both ways)!

Just make sure the timezones of your google and outlook calendar are the same!

YouTube offers a service that sends a video you are watching to your blog. It does not send html-code to your blog, but a code like this:

[ youtube=http://youtube.com/watch?v=4yX1F_nTcfc]

This works fine for blogs hosted on wordpress.com, but with standalone setups of wordpress it doesn’t work at all.

That’s why I quickly put together a plugin that makes the bracket code work. I used the Quicktime posting plugin as a starter. Thank you, Shawn Van Every.

Usage
Setup your standalone wordpress blog at YouTube and send a video to your blog. Or just copy the url of the YouTube video you are watching and put it in your blog like this:

[ youtube=http://youtube.com/watch?v=4yX1F_nTcfc] (without the space between bracket and y, though).

You can also set the size of the video in your post. Do something like this: [ youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0jjgk1-ac1I 150 100] (without the space between bracket and y, though).

YouTube.com directions
1. Go to YouTube.com
2. (Create an acount and) login
3. Go to ‘My Account/Account settings/Video posting Settings’
4. Choose ‘Add a Blog/Site’.
5. Choose ‘WordPress Self-Hosted’, fill in username and password of your WP blog, fill in api URL (http://your blog’s URL/xmlrpc.php) and a random WP API key (get one here).1 and click on the ‘Add Blog’ button.
6. Watch a video at YouTube.com and choose ‘Post Video’ from the options below the video.

Download

YouTube Brackets 3.0

Changelog: Cleaner code, pretty url support (youtube.com/v/), css (span class youtube). -Special thanks to Mike Thompson-

Youtube Brackets 2.1

Changelog: Resolved conflict with Shawns great quicktime posting plugin and added html-comment around code.

YouTube Brackets 2 beta
